It emphasizes developing effective self-defense skills in a relatively short period of time, using simple, fast, and efficient techniques designed to address common threats and violent situations that may occur in the real world.
Who Developed Krav Maga?
Imi Lichtenfeld (Sde-Or) was the founder and principal developer of Krav Maga.Imi was born in 1910 in Hungary and grew up in Bratislava, the capital of present-day Slovakia. His father, Samuel Lichtenfeld, had previously been a circus performer and a senior police detective. He was also the owner of Hercules, one of Bratislava's first weightlifting and physical training gyms, where wrestling, boxing, and weightlifting were practiced.Samuel was also an accomplished boxer and encouraged Imi from a young age to participate in a variety of athletic activities, including gymnastics, wrestling, and boxing.During his youth, Imi won several championships and achieved outstanding results in both boxing and wrestling. Between 1929 and 1939, he became one of the most successful wrestlers in his region.
Why Was Krav Maga Developed?
During the rise of Nazism in Europe, violent attacks against Jewish communities became increasingly common in the streets of many Eastern European cities.Imi and other young Jewish men became involved in numerous confrontations with antisemitic groups in Bratislava. Their goal was to defend members of the Jewish community from attacks and help prevent larger-scale violence in the Jewish quarter. These confrontations had a major influence on Imi's understanding of real-world combat. He began to recognize an important difference between combat sports and real violence. Techniques that worked well in competition did not necessarily work in an uncontrolled street confrontation involving surprise attacks, multiple attackers, weapons, or extreme stress. These experiences helped transform Imi from a competitive athlete into an experienced street fighter and eventually influenced his development of a practical system that ordinary people could learn and use to protect themselves.
How Did Krav Maga Come to Israel?
Imi arrived in the Land of Israel in 1942 and joined the Haganah, the main Jewish paramilitary organization operating before the establishment of the State of Israel.Because of his extensive fighting experience, Imi was recruited as an instructor in hand-to-hand combat, known at the time as Kapap.Beginning in the 1940s, Imi trained military units in physical conditioning and practical combat skills. Training included swimming, wrestling, boxing, practical self-defense, defenses against knife attacks, elements of European and Japanese jujutsu, practical grappling, and stick fighting.Between 1942 and 1948, Imi was involved in training members of the Haganah and its elite units, including the Palmach and Palyam, as well as police personnel.Following the establishment of the State of Israel and the creation of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Imi joined the IDF and became a senior instructor in physical training and hand-to-hand combat. This gave him an opportunity to continuously test, refine, and simplify his methods. One of the most important ideas behind the development of Krav Maga was simplicity. When Imi found that certain throws, jujutsu techniques, or other movements were too complicated for the average soldier to learn and perform reliably after limited training, he removed or modified them.He searched for simpler solutions that soldiers could learn quickly and perform effectively under pressure.During Imi's approximately 16 years of military service, the term "Krav Maga" gradually became established and began replacing the older term "Kapap."It was during these years that many of the fundamental principles of modern Krav Maga were developed.Initially, Krav Maga was primarily designed around the requirements of military and security personnel. The system therefore had to meet two important requirements:It had to be quick to learn and effective under extreme conditions.
From Military Krav Maga to Civilian Self-Defense
In 1964, Imi retired from military service and opened his first civilian Krav Maga training center in Netanya, Israel. This marked an important stage in the evolution of the system.Techniques originally developed around military requirements now had to be adapted to the needs of ordinary civilians — men, women, and eventually children — who might face very different types of threats.Imi continued developing and refining Krav Maga as a civilian self-defense system. In 1978, Imi and several of his senior students established the Israeli Krav Maga Association to promote and develop the system both in Israel and internationally. Imi served as president of the association for many years.Krav Maga began receiving significant international exposure during the 1980s, particularly in the United States. As international interest increased, Imi's students began teaching Krav Maga in different countries and establishing their own organizations. In 1995, the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF) was established. In 1996, Imi awarded Eyal Yanilov, one of his senior students, one of the highest levels of Krav Maga expertise. From there, Krav Maga continued spreading around the world.Today, Krav Maga is practiced in countries across Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and many other regions. It is taught to civilians as well as members of military, police, and security organizations.Imi Lichtenfeld (Sde-Or) passed away on January 9, 1998, at the age of 87.His system, however, continued to evolve.
What Are the Principles of Krav Maga?
Imi and his senior students developed Krav Maga around several fundamental principles:

"Don't get hurt."

"Act according to your ability, but act correctly."

"Use your knowledge when necessary."

"The simplest way is usually the shortest and fastest way."

Based on these principles, Imi sought to develop techniques that were simple, practical, and effective for people of different ages and physical abilities.Rather than relying on complicated movements requiring years of specialized training, Krav Maga was designed around techniques and principles that could be learned relatively quickly and applied under pressure.
Who Continued Imi's Krav Maga?
Imi trained many students throughout both his military and civilian teaching careers.Over time, several of these students became senior Krav Maga instructors and continued developing and teaching the system. Some remained closer to traditional Krav Maga, while others introduced adaptations based on their own experience, modern combat sports, military and law-enforcement requirements, or developments in self-defense training. Some of Imi's well-known senior students included Eli Avikzar, Haim Gidon, Eyal Yanilov, Haim Zut, Rafi Elgrissi, and Shayke Barak, among others. Many of these instructors and their students eventually established separate Krav Maga organizations. This is one of the reasons why today there are numerous Krav Maga organizations, federations, associations, and teaching methodologies around the world.Although their training methods and techniques may sometimes differ, most ultimately trace their roots back to Imi Lichtenfeld and the system he developed in Israel.Today, Krav Maga continues to evolve as instructors around the world test, modify, and adapt techniques to modern threats and new knowledge about combat, stress, and self-defense.Continue reading: Why Are There So Many Different Krav Maga Organizations and Systems?
